‘Everybody wants to live’

Posted By on December 3, 2010

I’ve just got off a plane from Dhaka to Bangkok where I sat next to a 77 year old Austrian gentleman who, at the age of 73, was given a second life installment. He shared some wisdom …

Four years ago, jaundiced and feeling tired, he underwent surgery to remove a pancreatic tumour.
‘George, you have cancer and only 6 – 8 weeks to live. Get your things in order.’ (Pancreatic cancer is nasty and that time estimate would not be an exaggeration.) A week later he got another call from his doctor who informed him that due to confusion with the pathology, the pathology laboratory had sent it to Vienna for a second opinion. That opinion was that it was pre-cancerous, and that further surgery was required but he had a good chance of surviving.

Four years later I watched as he downed a concoction of tablets (including the very necessary pancreatic enzymes) and injected insulin into his thigh.
‘It must be hard,’ I said, remembering all that when you’re travelling.
‘It’s easy,’ he replied. ‘I want to live.’

Conversation flowed and we got onto the subject of traffic in Dhaka. It is truly hair-raising stuff.
‘I saw a poor dog weave it’s way safely through traffic yesterday,’ he said, ‘and I said to the Bangladeshi next to me What do you think that dog is thinking? He replied I wish a car would kill me so that I can get out of this hell-hole called Dhaka. But that wasn’t true,’ continued George. ‘That dog looked relieved when he made it safely to the other side. Everybody wants to live.’

Yes, everybody wants to live.

Hence the use of lying words like “harvest” and “sacrifice” when referencing the killing of animals for food or profit. Something immeasurably precious is unrightfully taken when the life of one sentient being is taken by another sentient being. Their life is theirs…..that life does not belong to someone else………..

Taking what does not belong to you is called theft, taking a life that does not belong to you is called murder. Living the life of a thief and murderer….teaching the children of human animals to be thieves and murderers…….this is called “normal”.

    Help.

The words we use to justify what we do …

This gentleman’s words were particularly powerful because they say it in the simplest, most basic terms. On another blog someone defensively argued that we were all born to die, and therefor it was okay to breed animals to die. But that is so wrong. As George said, ‘Everybody wants to live.’ You can’t say it in much simpler words than that.
